Gallery at Calicut is known for its treasured collection
of paintings made by Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma
. Due to its association with Raja Ravi Verma - the
first Indian painter to make use of old colors - this
gallery holds an important position in the Indian art
circle . The paintings displayed portray mythological
events, royal portraits and day-to-day life.
Kozhikode Beach offers the leisure-seekers a long stretch
of endless sandy beach. The spectacle of the setting sun
from this beach is most glorious to see. Other attractions
here are The Lighthouse, the Lions Park (children's park)
and the Aquarium . Dolphin's Point is where one can see
dolphins playing in the sea of an early morning. Thikkoti
Lighthouse - overlooks Velliyamkallu of Moodadi coast and
was built after a shipwreck, the remains of which can
still be seen here. The region around the Velliyamkallu
rock is the transit home to migratory birds.
Excursions
One can also enjoy various excursions from Calicut and
to name a few are of Beypore Beach, Kadalindi
bird Sanctuary, The Kappad beach, Lakkidi, The
famous Lokanrakayu Bhagavati Temple,
Thusharagiri waterfalls and Wayanad wildlife
sanctyary, The Beypore beach located around 11
kilometers from Calicut is also a commercial center .
The beach is famous for its ship-building center and the
Arabs still come to Beypore for buying large boats and
ships. This place is famous for its ancient style of
martial arts known as 'Kalaripayattu'. Other
excusrions are that of
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
- located around 19 kilometers from Kozhikode. This
sanctuary houses a variety of native birds. During the
migrating season one can find over 50 species of migratory
birds flocking over here in large numbers.
Kappad Beach is the one where Vasco da Game landed on the
27th of May hence finding a sea route to India . This beach
is very well maintained and is worth visiting . Lakkidi is a
beautiful hill-station located at the top of Thamaraserri
Ghat pass, which is 700 meters above sea level. This
beautiful hill station is covered with lush green forests
and the softly cascading streams here give a typical
paradise look. The Lokanarkavu Bhagavati Temple is dedicated
to Goddess Durga. The two adjacent shrines here dedicate to
Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. And this temple is often
mentioned in the traditional ballads of Kerala.
Thusharagiri Waterfalls are nestled in the hilly regions of
the Western Ghats. The gurgling waters that cascade down the
mountains present a very picturesque scene and is an deal
place to relax and unwind. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
established in 1973 is located adjoining the protected area
network of Nagarhole and Bandipore and is home to many
species of birds and animals.
How to reach Calicut
By Air :
Kozhikode airport is located at a distance of about 25 km
from the center of the city and is well connected by air to
Mumbai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Goa, Madurai and Chennai.
By Rail :
Calicut is connected to all the major cities of India
through rail link. The station is around 2 km southof
Mananchira Square. The city is well connected by train with
important places like Mangalore, Ernakulam,
Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa and Mumbai.
By Road :
Calicut is well linked with various destinations in Kerala
and beyond. National Highway-17 links Calicut with the rest
of the cities in Kerala and neighboring states.
